The Biola Theatre major aims to produce committed Christian graduates who demonstrate excellence in understanding the theoretical components of drama and the practice of dramatic performance. Biola Theatre majors are trained in both the theory and praxis of craft and are prepared for a professional career in theatre and other communicative arts venues.
As a Theatre major, you will experience the practice of acting and study theory of how theatre functions and communicates. The Theatre major will learn to use the craft of acting to communicate messages to an audience who has come to witness entertainment, but will also consider important issues and ideas through performance. Theatre can convey a number of archetypal ideas and suggestions, and actors will grow to apply intention and pathos into their roles. Writers and directors will train on how to cast vision for performances and implement ethos behind the stories they portray.
For those who prefer working "behind the scenes," we offer classes exploring stage direction, set construction, and makeup and costume design. Students have the ability to access or create a wardrobe for a performance and learn how to maintain a cohesive look for a particular show. Lighting and sound design are also crucial areas of study, which Theatre majors will be able to explore with hands on experience and professional equipment.

There are no additional admissions requirements for the Theatre major. The Theatre department requests that those who enroll into Biola, submit a resume detailing their experience with dramatic performance and/or stage development to the Theatre department by the first day of classes. You may send your resume to melanie.whitcomb@biola.edu.
As a Christian Theatre major, you will have the opportunity to see how aspects of acting can transform the messages found in church and para-church settings, revealing the Truth of a relationship with Christ and how it can change a person from the inside out. "Drama in Christian Ministry," for example, is a required course that emphasizes communicating spiritual messages through the performed word.
Additionally Biola desires to equip Theatre majors with real world experience. Biola University is ideally situated in Southern California, close to the entertainment industry, allowing for exploration of current trends and access to practical internships. Another component of Biola's Theatre program is the "Curtain Time in London" tour, allowing students to travel as a group to London, England and visit theatrical venues and participate in acting workshops.
